I haven't done an EC update since September, so I thought I was due.
Last night I was over at my friend's house, and after I had taken Burkley to the potty for the second time, she asked me, "So do you basically just hover him over the toilet now and he goes?" We chuckled and I answered, "Pretty much!"
Of course we have our off days, but the majority of the time, Burkley has one miss a day, usually in the morning after breakfast (if I know that, you'd think I could catch it!?). So, that means, when he wakes up, he goes potty and poo in the toilet, we put on a dipe, have breakfast, and then the next time I offer him a "pottytunity" he's wet. We put on a clean dipe and the rest of the day he wears that same dipe (or Skivvies) until bedtime.
We don't practice EC during the night because, well, I guess I just prefer our sleep. :) I do so love only having to wash dipes and wipes about once a week versus the two to three times each week I was doing it. Well, honestly, I actually enjoy doing laundry, especially dipes, but it is nice to not have to mess with it as often.
My friend Sarah (mentioned above) joked that I should note all of the places Burkley has gone to the bathroom at his young age. I thought this was a funny challenge, so here goes:
* Home
* Grandma & Grandpa's
* Beeky & Poppy's (my husband's parents)
* The homes of my siblings and in-laws
* Numerous friends' homes
* Museums
* Zoos
* Airports
* Restaurants
* Outside (hee hee) --parks, parking lots, picnics, etc.
Okay, so this list isn't that interesting because he really just goes everywhere.
The only problem I'm having is that I need to have more confidence in using his Skivvies because they are way easier to take on and off, which was the reason I got them in the first place. Taking on and off his dipe, cover, and clothes almost every hour is annoying and always turns into a mini-wrestling match because he doesn't like to stop playing to get changed. My husband won't go for the leggings look, which would help some, but really it's the dipes that are the annoying part. EC Wear is also an option, I suppose, but it is a bit expensive to buy a whole new wardrobe. In the summer it wasn't really an issue, I just let him roam around nakey or just in a dipe and t-shirt or prefold only, but now that it's cold, and our old house is cold, that just won't work. So, that's just one piece of the EC puzzle I'm dealing with, but I do think soon we will be able to rely more on the Skivvies and I'll get over my anxiety of having misses in them.
So, to sum it up, EC continues to go great. He's a star. I take him to the potty pretty much every hour. I still can only really read his cues for poo and I don't see any for potty, hence the whole "I just hover him over a toilet and he goes" thing-- which is a prime example of the "communication" part of EC working both ways. I communicate to him that it's time to go, and he goes. :)
Also, as an afterthought: I always used to think people who practiced EC were a combination of weird and impressive. It's still somewhat odd to me that I practice EC with my son and that it actually works. Pretty neat.

It's fun being both weird and impressive, isn't it? ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great update on ecing. It sounds like you and B are communicating great! I think you've got to get some leggings, even if you only use them at home. It will make your lives much easier. You can always use cut-off tube socks if you don't want to invest in the expensive leggings!
So that WAS human poop I stepped on in the Target parking lot.
ReplyDeletekidding! :-)
Ha! Leah, you wish. He's only gone #1 in the great outdoors. :)
