I wanted to update ya'll (and my records) on our elimination communication journey.
Thanks to my virtual pals over at the Natural Parents Network, I was steered to some helpful resources (here and here and a few others as well) and we've been trying our hand at EC for three weeks now.
Things started out great. It was a lot of fun (for me) though Burkley didn't seem to know what was going on. Then we had a few bad days where every time I'd take him to the toilet, make the cue sound, say the word "potty" and do the sign, he'd just sit there, or writhe in annoyance and whine/cry to get off, then I'd take him back to his changing table to put on a diaper, and just as I'd get the Snappi secured, he'd pee. Little stinker.
But, those NPN mamas encouraged me to keep it up- explaining that obviously he is getting some kind of clue if he's going every. single. time. we come back from the toilet. So, now in week three, things have improved. I haven't changed a poopy diaper in like 5 days. I still miss a lot of potty, but we usually start out the day pretty well and he goes several times in the toilet before lunch time. The afternoons are harder for some reason.
Anyway, I am encouraged by the steady improvements I'm making at offering him the chance to go at what is seeming like the right times. It is important to remember that EC is not potty-training. I am not training him to go in the toilet rather than his diaper as much as I am learning when he needs to go and then I take him to the toilet so he can do it and not wet himself. This has improved too-- at first when he noticed himself peeing, he'd stop. Like the sound and sight of it distracted him. But now I think he likes it. He notices it and then purposefully keeps going.
It is of course harder to do this when we're out and about--primarily because I haven't figured out a good way to take off his diaper and take him to a toilet when we're in public. But, that's okay. I consider us part-time EC'ers for now. It also doesn't help that so far it seems that Burkley has NO signal for pee. He just goes. But, I'm working on learning him and learning his timings. So far it's been easiest to catch it when he wakes up from a nap or in the morning.
We shall see where this journey leads us. Most of all, it's lessening our diaper loads, and in fact, the other day I went to go bleach my diapers in the sun and I noticed that I didn't have any dirty ones to bleach. He hadn't pooped in any of them! :)
And because a post without pictures is just no fun, here are a few from this past weekend when we were just hanging around playing as a family. :)

i love these pictures!!
ReplyDeleteAdorable pictures, and such great news on your EC journey! It's so neat when you can see the awareness on their face when they "go." Just recently Annabelle started nodding her head and smiling when the pee starts flowing. It's like she knows she's doing what her body needs to do :)
ReplyDeleteI'm talking about a lot of the EC trainers we use out and about as part of the carnival this week. Some of them are really easy to get on and off or up and down when you're out! I have also started bringing a potty seat out with me in a canvas tote, and I just use it on public toilets when the babe needs to go. We have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Growing-Green-Potty-Seat-Natural/dp/B002ACOY3K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1309696147&sr=8-1 So far, that seems to be working!
