Our little guy is now two! What an absolutely fun time this is. We are so blessed by his presence in our lives and can't imagine our family without him. He brings us so much laughter and joy (and occasional doses of frustration) and my life is truly better and fuller because he is in it.
I've seen some bloggers write birthday letters to their children, so I thought I'd try my hand at it....
Boogie-Bear-Burkley-Baby,
You're two. Two years ago you entered our world with a bang at 34.5 weeks gestation. We weren't expecting you that soon, yet once you were here it seemed like the perfect time. Your birth was wonderful, but I didn't get my dream of grabbing my baby and pulling him right up to my chest after he was born that I was so excited for throughout my pregnancy. As soon as you were born, you were taken from me and I didn't get to see for a couple of hours. I still remember that day like it was yesterday.
I have been blessed to have support from family and wonderful friends as we took care of you and tended to you: our new little baby. Those early days were spent with multiple checkups and tests to make sure your jaundice levels were tolerable and to see how you were tolerating stimulation, nursing, visits, etc. Each day, week, and month, we grew to love you more and more and love new things about you.
I take a small pride in knowing that you have been kept safe, healthy, and whole thus far in your innocent little life. You have depended on me, and I have done my best to be there for you for whatever you need. Since coming home from the NICU, you have not fallen asleep at night without being in my arms. I can count the amount of times you've taken a nap without falling asleep in my arms on one hand. This is what you have needed and I have dutifully and happily provided it for you. We have learned together, played together, cried together, and laughed together. I am thrilled that we have met our goal of nursing for two years.
You are silly, enthusiastic, and sensitive. You love to play pretend; especially with dinosaurs and jungle animals. You know and love ALL the characters' from the Lion King. You love to eat "fru-fars" (fruit bars) and to drink through a straw. You hate bedtime, naptime, baths, changing your diaper, and getting clothes on, and brushing your teeth especially if any of those activities interrupt your play. You love to learn and frequently ask to do "Schoooooooo!" You know many letters, their names and sounds, and can count to twelve. You love to make crafts and color. You love to watch video clips on the "picker" (computer) and know how to "unlock" the iPod, choose your app, and play your games. You like to help do everything-- shut doors, pick up and go get things for us, help do the grocery shopping, dry the dishes, and "cleam-up." You love to sing songs, especially "Hakuna Matata," "ABCs," "Twinkle-twinkle," and "Shut De Do" (<---and to watch this video of that song!).
I'm thrilled to see what the next year of your life holds. I know it will keep getting better yet also more and more challenging as we try to teach you all we can about life. I'm excited to see your personality continue to grow and watch your love for learning expand. I'm eager to see you as a big brother and watch your understanding of all things develop.
We love you more than anything, Burkley James, and are blessed beyond measure to have you in our lives.
Love, Your Mama
