In addition to a breastfeeding update, I figured we were also due for an EC update.
Burkley's EC success waxes and wanes with the moods of a toddler.
Some days he rocks it and goes in the toilet pretty much all day.
Other days it's a wrestling match to get him to sit on the toilet long enough to finish going.
It's even more of a wrestling match to get him to lay still enough to get a diaper back on, which is why we are slowly working toward wearing Skivvies only. (Stay tuned for a review and giveaway coming in March for the famed Super Skivvies!) I have also ordered some "mama cloth" from Etsy to put in his undies, as I've heard that works well as a training pants option. Pulling up and down undies like this makes our lives so much easier as he seriously HATES having a diaper put on him.
Lately, we've had many adventures with poop. He'll go potty on the toilet and then scurry away and poop on his bedroom floor or some other place not intended for pooping. Or, and this is really impressive, he even pooped one time over the empty pant leg of his footie pajamas (they were only on his arms, dragging behind his nakey booty) and the poo went all the way down to the foot of the footies. Lovely.
We recently invested in a little potty chair from our local Kids-Swap. It was only $5, so I figured, let's do it. Lately he's been signing for "potty" which is awesome, but it's generally while he's going in his pants or seconds after he finished. So, I was thinking that having a potty downstairs would help us get there faster than running upstairs to go on the big toilet. So far, he's petrified of the little potty. I had wondered how this was going to go because he's always only gone on the toilet, never a little potty. He also rarely actually sits on the toilet (I don't know why, maybe the seat is cold?) but rather insists on being hovered over it. He's getting really heavy for this though, so I'm ready for that to be over. The same goes for the little potty.
So, we'll see. I don't push it with the little potty (besides, I hate cleaning it), I just show it to him, sign "potty" and see what he does. Often, he runs away. Sometimes though, he'll come up to it and sign "potty" and look at it. I'm letting him adjust to this little potty at his own pace.
When I agreed to buy this potty, I didn't know what color it was or what style it was. I do like that it has a cushy little seat (maybe he'll appreciate it too one day!) and has a lid that we can shut in between cleanings so the dog stays away. I also don't care that it is pink, as we're trying to avoid the whole "pink is for girls, blue is for boys" thing in our family.
Anyway, that is where we stand (er, sit? Wait- hover!) on the whole EC thing in our family at 15 months. The best thing about EC, in my opinion, is the undies. When we're out in public, he rarely goes in his skivvies and pretty much always goes in the toilet. It's nice not to have lay him on a gross changing table or mess with that at all.
Not washing diapers as often is also a major plus!
However, it can be tiresome doing EC in public simply due to the frequency of his need to go. Actually, this can get tiresome at home too. He goes about every 45-60 minutes and it can really interrupt our play and relaxation time. He stays dry during naps which are longer, so that is nice too.

We shall see where the journey leads us. I'll be sure to do an update when I get the mama cloth I ordered and give that a try!

I love your updates, because I have never tried EC with any of my four kids. Maybe the next one? :-)
ReplyDeleteWe have a Baby Bjorn Little Potty and when I finally committed to going back into EC, I just let Sasha run naked A LOT and had the potty in the room with us, wherever we were. This did make for some messes on the floor, but the thing I liked about this approach was that the potty was very accessible to HER. However, it is low enough and has no lid - so she could manage it on her own.
ReplyDeleteWe try to offer Sasha a "pottytunity" every 45 - 60 minutes when we're out, too. She gets too distracted to remember to ask in time otherwise. She can go longer, but this helps avoid any issues. We don't usually carry back up clothes.
I've started working with Spencer on EC and every catch leaves me thrilled with one less diaper to wash. :-)
