In our family, we introduce solids through the Babyled Weaning method (BLW). There are many reasons we do this including the fact that it is super adorable (yes, that is a fact). Oh, and it's easy. And, bonus, it's super great for all sorts of development (hand-eye coordination, the concept of chewing-and-then-swallowing, developing the palate, you get the idea).
When Burkley started eating food, he ate with gusto. He never stopped! We had to reign him once in awhile so he'd keep nursing in an amount that was necessary for his age. In babyled weaning, you just give your babe whatever the family is eating, you don't make anything special for them. Burkley loved food from the get-go and rarely choked or gagged. (He must get that from me).
Cadriel, however, has been a bit slower at getting the hang of things. But, because "food before one is just for fun," we aren't worried. He started off (six months, per the WHO Code) choking on every single time he ate. Like, not just gagging, but Heimlich-maneuver choking, so we decided to hold off a few more weeks. Now, at seven months, he's doing a bit better, but he still doesn't seem to really like it very much. At least not compared to how much Burkley adored every food we gave him. Again, that's okay, just a noted difference.
I mentioned that BLW is super cute, right? I mean, really, babies feeding
themselves!? C'mon. Doesn't get much more adorable. See below for proof.

If you've never considered babyled weaning, I highly recommend you research it as an option for your family. People the world over feed their babies this way and I'm always one to vote for not perpetuating American consumerism (you do know that "baby food" is an American invention? $$$$, friends!). Plus, how nice to not have to sit and feed my baby, I can just sit and enjoy meals with the whole family. :)
Yes Yes Yes!! It is crazy to me that so many people buy baby food or spend so many hours making and freezing purees. I did BLW with my now 2.5 year old and had such a great experience with it. My DD is now such a great eater, finishing her meat and veggies and loving fruit. I also didn't give her any grains till 2 per Weston-Price guidelines and research showing babies don't have the digestive enzyme amylase needed to digest them.
