Tot School ~ Seeds

Today we hit up our local botanical garden. A few weeks back I won (!!!) an individual membership there from our local La Leche League's Family Fun Day fundraiser! What an awesome prize!!!

My hubby and I got married at the botanical center, but other than our anniversary each year, we don't go back often. But, now I can take the kiddos anytime I want!

Right when we got there, Burkley shouted, "This is amazing!"

We were the first people there when it opened, so we had the place to ourselves except for the groundskeepers.

When we got home, I decided it was the perfect time to try out this project that I've had bookmarked for a couple of weeks. We got a seed packet from the botanical center, so today was perfect.

I got a sleeve, the kind you put sports cards in, from my dad, who collects sports cards. We went out to our yet-to-be-planted-garden to scoop up some dirt. (Don't mind the blanket on the baby's head, I was trying to shade him from the noonday sun.)

We got our supplies set up: the plastic sleeve with dirt-filled pockets, seeds, a bowl of water, and a medicine dropper

After putting one (or two, depending on the little guy's whims) seed in each pocket, we watered them with the dropper. I think he loved that part best.

I tied yarn through the holes I punched along the top and hung it in the window.
We discussed the three things seeds need to grow: soil, water, and sunshine, and had him point to/identify each component. We also talked about how God created all living things. I'm excited for them to start growing so we can talk about roots, stems, leaves, etc. The seed pack said sprouts will come in 7-10 days, so that's not too long of a waiting period. It's a flowering type of lettuce, so maybe will eat it as well as enjoy its beauty! Or maybe we'll transfer them outside to our garden. Either way, this is a great project for little ones. They can do each part on their own and it's quick and easy for their little attention spans. It's also cheap, which is great!
