Life with a Two Year Old

It's been a few weeks since I've written. Life has been uneventful, but quite enjoyable. I've been getting ready for a craft show, so I've spending naptime holed up in my craft room. But, I wanted to take some time to jot down some thoughts about life with a new two-year-old, so I have it on record.

His language development continues to bring us hilarity throughout our days. He is very verbal and it's wonderful being able to communicate with such a little person. He changes his mind every other minute, of course unless he's being stubborn and determined to get something he wants. Some common phrases we hear very frequently around here are:

"Mama, I hungry!"
"Mama, I hold you?"
"Rooooooaaaaarrrrrrr!!!!!!!!" (he has quite the ferocious roar)
"I fis-stix!" (I fix it)
"Where boy are?" (insert any toy for the "boy"-- this is just how he asks where something is)
"I work too, like Daddy!"
"I schoo!" (I school)
"I tummy-ache," generally followed by, "I poo-poo!"
"No, I do it!"

He's doing fairly well with pottying on the toilet, but he has had diarrhea for over a month now, usually about twice a day, and I just can't catch that (hence the proclamation of a tummy-ache and then poo-poo that we hear often). Though he's only asked to go potty a couple of times, he will pretty much always go if I put him on the toilet. We will go most days with only one or two wet diapers, other than the poopy ones. His favorite thing to do while on the toilet, I ashamedly admit, is to watch Gumby on YouTube. I had to find a way to get him to sit down long enough to not get off the toilet midstream!

He LOVES his rainbow jammies and asks to wear them all the time!
He often wants to be held, which is hard on my growing belly. On the other hand, he does not want to be held at times it would benefit us-- in a store, in a parking lot, heading to the car, etc., he then wants to roam independently. He is a little sponge, soaking up everything and spitting it back out at us in new, creative ways that make us laugh. He'll hear something, see something, read about something, and then talk about it days later and it's like playing a game trying to figure out what he's remembering.

He loves going to Toddler Time at the library, but it helps that I go with him. He's having a really bad stint of separation anxiety lately. He screams hysterically if I leave him in the church nursery, at Bible study, or anywhere other than with family. He is willing to go to the nursery during our small group, but only when I go with him for the first few minutes to help him transition. He's so concerned about me being with him, in fact, that throughout our day he'll ask if I'm going with him places. I'll ask if he wants to go to Gramma's, and he'll ask, "Mama too?" or even around our house--I'll ask if he wants to take a nap, or go upstairs to play, or whatever, and he'll ask, "Mama too?" He's always wanting to make sure I'm coming. It's pretty cute, but it also saddens me when he gets so upset. I feel like since he's asking about me coming everywhere that it is just a phase.

He absolutely loves learning and frequently asks to do school, but also just creates his own learning and practice situations impromptu, on his own (obviously- he's two!). In fact, today at lunch he started biting his pretzels into letter shapes. So, I went with it, and we had lots of fun creating letters.
It started with him holding these up telling me it was a "Y" and "C for carrot!"
So, we went to town making more letters.

Then, after lunch, we were playing in the living room and he found his tin of magnet numbers and said, "I numbers!" So, we got them out. But, rather than talking about numbers, he wanted to do a color sort, which was fine with me, since he's not very strong with his colors, though he's definitely getting better!

He likes to help pick out his clothes and shoes, though he's not yet able to get dressed or undressed on his own. He spends half the night in his own bed in his room, and then comes in to sleep with us around 1-3am. He's still nursing a bit, but not much, just before his nap and bed (as it's been for about a year now), but only for a minute or two. I'm not even sure if he's getting anything, though I do think his diarrhea could be because my milk has changed to colostrum. Just a guess. Once in awhile he'll nurse during the night for a couple of minutes, but even that is rare lately.

I'd have to say my favorite thing about having a two-year old is the sweetness--he generally has great manners, often asks for "family hug!" (when we all three give a big group hug), and is so excited to see Daddy come home from work each day. His longing to understand the world and the constant questioning of "What's that?" and "Where go?" and more is so endearing.

What's your favorite part about life with a two year old?

  1. Oh my your son is so adorable! I love those striped pajamas too :)

Something struck me though, the tummy aches and diarrhea - my daughter was diagnosed with celiac after months of diarrhea and stomach pain (and hard bloated stomach). She came down with her most dramatic symptoms after I night weaned her (less nursing, there is a correlation that breast-feeding can delay the onset of celiac.)

I'm not saying this to alarm you, obviously diarrhea can have many reasons, but it really struck me and I wanted to throw it out there in case his stomach aches and diahrea do not stop. The initial test for celiac is a simple blood draw. Ok not simple bc blood draws stink, but it's not an invasive test at least.

Anyway, thanks for your lovely post.
